Rental car companies are under scrutiny for gas price gouging, USA Today did a story last week

A USA TODAY survey of auto rental gas prices at 13 big airports on April 25 found Hertz was charging $9.29 a gallon at all 13. Dollar and Thrifty were charging $8.99 a gallon at two.

At $9.29 a gallon, Hertz customers renting a Ford Club Wagon, which has a 35-gallon fuel tank, would owe Hertz $325.15 for gas if they returned the wagon with a nearly empty tank and hadn't prepaid for the gas.

Renters who pay ahead of time for a tank of gas from Hertz or another car rental company, though, may find the per-gallon price cheaper than at many local gas stations.

Of 102 prepay prices charged by the eight big car rental companies at 13 airports on April 25, 54 were cheaper than the average price at local gas stations that day. Forty-three prices charged for prepay gasoline were higher, USA TODAY's analysis of rental company prices and the AAA auto club's gas-station data found.

Most or all rental companies' prepay prices were less than the average at local gas stations

Though renters who prepay may pay less per gallon than at local gas stations, it's questionable whether they save money by doing so.

Prepayment is for a full tank of gas and can benefit renters who return vehicles with a nearly empty gas tank. But many renters who pay ahead return vehicles with a substantial amount of gas in the tank and are not credited for it.

This is not verifiable, but a Shelby GT 350 #6s966 may have been pulled out of a Kansas garage after 30+ years

This story has issues, but notice the photo of the GT 350 doesn't have the H after the GT 350 on the rocker panel decal, and the story claims it is a GT 350 H rent a racer Hertz car with original paint.

the original story http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2011/apr/02/rare-1966-shelby-gt350-fastback-found-garage-lawre but Jalopnik has the story http://jalopnik.com/#!5787316/how-a-66-shelby-gt350-was-hidden-in-trash-for-26-years as March 30th 2011 and writes that it's a Hertz rent a racer GT 350 H, and the Leake Auction website has no story to go with the photo gallery of the GT 350 that does not have an H after the GT 350.

The CNN video news clip never mentions Hertz. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2011/04/06/dnt.rare.nustang.found.kctv?hpt=T2

Shelby Forums says that this will be written up in the Spring 2011 issue of the Shelby American http://www.shelbyforums.com/forums/1965-1970-shelby-mustang-gt350-gt500/13464-6s966-found-shed.html

I learned about this story from Robert L and his link was to the Kansas City Star article: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/04/09/2789114/rare-car-found-hidden-beneath.html

The SAAC forum addresses this story http://saacforum.com/index.php?topic=12348.0 and in the thread they state it was orignally a GT 350 H red and gold, but now has a replacement engine as well as a repaint

If anyone knows more about this, or has read the spring 2011 Shelby American, please drop me an email and add anything you can to this story

Thanks to Chad Lawhorn the story writer from the Lawrence Journal for sending me the link to the original article!

Rental car fuel charges as of last week, before gas prices jumped

National...........$5.01 a gallon
Avis..................$7.99
Hertz................$8.29

This is what you will be charged if they have to top off the tank, if you opt not to prepay them, and don't fill the car before returning it.

Hertz Buy Advantage Rent A Car For $33M

Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (HTZ) will buy Advantage Rent A Car for $33 million, after the rental-car company's bid won out over another offer for the company.

Advantage, suffering along with the rest of the sector from the weak economy and tight credit, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December. The company, which posted 2008 revenue of $146 million, has 20 locations, down from 140 at its peak.

Hertz hasn't been immune from those issues, having swung to a big fourth-quarter loss on charges. Revenue also fell 16% to $1.78 billion in the quarter. Just this week, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services lowered Hertz's long-term corporate credit rating two notches deeper into junk.

The car-rental industry has suffered as everyone cuts back on travel. The weak economy and credit crunch also have made it harder for rental-car companies to find buyers for their used automobiles and to secure financing to buy new ones. The industry is lobbying Congress to allow car-rental companies to use Troubled Asset Relief Program funds to finance new auto purchases.

Still, Hertz gains a brand aimed at price-sensitive customers in U.S. leisure destinations, showing how the recession has made it easier for bigger, stronger players to pick up distressed competitors.

The bankruptcy court will hold a hearing Friday, with Hertz expecting a close next Wednesday.

Hertz shares were unchanged in after-hours trading. They ended the regular session up 7.4% at $4.22.
